Water Meter Program

Sep 9, 2025

The City of North Tonawanda is undertaking a citywide upgrade of its water metering system to improve accuracy, efficiency, and long-term sustainability. Most of the City’s current meters are more than 30 years old, resulting in inaccurate readings, billing errors, and substantial water loss.

The introduction of smart water meters will modernize the system by eliminating the need for self-reported readings and reducing human error, ensuring that all households are billed fairly based on actual usage. Additionally, the new meters support water conservation and facilitate early leak detection. Features such as Acoustic Leak Detection allow the City to identify unusual usage patterns and detect even small or hidden leaks, preventing costly infrastructure damage.

This investment is projected to generate over $60,000 in annual savings through reduced postage, materials, and labor costs while strengthening the City’s ability to manage resources responsibly. The upgrade also aligns North Tonawanda with regional municipalities that have already adopted modern metering technology, ensuring the community keeps pace with industry best practices.
